IT Weekly Roundup, March 4
From the business wires this week: the knighting of Bill Gates; security solutions to protect against malware, information leaks and phishing; and more.
Not only is he the world’s wealthiest person,
Bill
Gates is now also Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the
British Empire. The Microsoft co-founder and chairman was knighted Wednesday at Buckingham
Palace in London by Queen Elizabeth in recognition of his contribution to British
interests.
Gates, however, won’t be able to join the exclusive ranks of
Sir Sean Connery and Sir
Paul McCartney, as only Britons and Commonwealth citizens are entitled to add
the title “Sir” to the fronts of their names. Not that it matters,
since he could probably have people do that anyhow. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/mar05/03-02GatesKnighthoodPR.asp
While other antivirus products scan whole hard drives for infected files, MicroWorld
Antivirus searches registries for suspicious entries which can virtually
revive viruses and other malware even after hard drive scans. The new upgraded
version of the free toolkit from MicroWorld Technologies
can detect such malware as porno dialers, adware and spyware, as well as update
automatically to treat new viruses and eliminate worms that attach themselves
to Web browsers like Internet Explorer. http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp
Covelight Systems released the latest version of
its security appliance solution. Enhancements to Percept
2.0 include high-level incident detection and notification, tracking
of user interaction with sensitive information assets, and expanded support
for third-party products, syslog messages and network timing protocol (NTP).

Clear Search’s Anti-Phishing
software uses heuristics to detect phishing attacks and anticipate events before
a user opens e-mails. If a phishing attack is detected, a pop-up warning immediately
warns the user and provides remedies to the attack. The program supports Internet
Explorer, AOL, Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora and most Web-based e-mail systems.
